Last month we shared a story about Steve Waddell’s TEDx appearance. Well, here’s a update since then.

Steve’s talk, Start with WHO, Not WHY,” has become a breakout success. In less than three weeks, it has amassed over 225,000 views and nearly 10,000 likes, making it the second most-watched TEDxWarrenton talk since the event’s inception. His message is clear: entrepreneurs should focus on WHO they serve, prioritizing customer needs and co-creating solutions, rather than starting with a personal WHY. This shift toward value-driven entrepreneurship has resonated with audiences across the globe.

Steve’s impact is not limited to online views; it’s making a difference in classrooms right here in Hampton Roads. Earlier this month, Steve visited Ashley Houchin Smith’s classrooms, where his TEDx talk became a centerpiece for discussion. Ashley has incorporated Steve’s book, Valuepreneurs, into her curriculum, inspiring students to rethink their approach to entrepreneurship. By focusing on WHO they aim to serve, these young minds are learning the importance of creating businesses that prioritize value and impact.

Closer to home, Steve’s philosophy took center stage at the Hampton Roads Chamber’s Home-Based Business event, where he served as the keynote speaker. His talk complemented the event’s focus on empowering local entrepreneurs, and the audience responded enthusiastically to his ideas. Moderated by Barbara H. Smith, the event underscored Steve’s ability to connect with entrepreneurs at all stages of their journey.

The Chamber supported Steve’s mission by purchasing 100 paperback and 35 hardcover copies of Valuepreneurs to distribute to attendees. Photos from the event capture attendees proudly holding their copies, symbolizing the growing momentum behind Steve’s Valuepreneur mindset.

A Vision for Impact

At the heart of Steve’s TEDx talk is a vision for creating real, lasting impact. His own journey—from shipbuilder to entrepreneur to award-winning author—illustrates the power of engaging with customers and centering their needs in the innovation process. His story is a testament to the transformative potential of shifting from WHY to WHO.

As the views on his TEDx talk climb and his message continues to inspire locally and globally, one thing is certain: Steve Waddell’s Valuepreneur philosophy is reshaping the entrepreneurial landscape, and Hampton Roads is proud to call him one of its own.
